Foil-To-Coating Adhesion

Foil-to-coating adhesion is the bond between a hot-stamp foil and the cured coating on a decorated cosmetic package, especially coated glass. Adhesion depends on coating chemistry, cure level, surface cleanliness and energy, foil formulation, bottle geometry, stamping temperature, pressure, and dwell. A successful transfer requires both the glass-to-coating and coating-to-foil interfaces to remain stable through filling, handling, transport, and use. Buyers should approve the complete decoration stack rather than selecting coating and foil separately. Physical samples should be evaluated for edge definition, rub resistance, and adhesion after representative aging, while artwork and decoration sequence remain fixed before mass production.

Foil-To-Coating Adhesion — Quick Summary

  • Hot stamping can often be applied over spray coating, but adhesion depends on the exact coating, cure, foil, artwork, bottle geometry, tooling, and process window
  • Decoration methods create different color, texture, graphic and metallic effects and require different production controls
  • Glass, pigments, inks, coatings, foils, caps and pump parts can have different evidence needs, so a broad “heavy-metal free” statement is not a substitute for a scoped declaration or suitable test report
